An unidentified man who led Chula Vista police on a high-speed chase on Interstate 805 was killed Monday after being thrown from his car as it overturned on an off-ramp, police said.

The death was the third in less than a week involving high-speed police chases. The two others involved innocent bystanders.

The man, who was not carrying identification, died in the bushes near the northbound 805 off-ramp at H Street, police said.

Lt. Dan Wolf said about 2 pounds of a substance believed to be cocaine was found in the car. The substance was being analyzed, he said.

Police said the driver of the vehicle was ordered to stop for a traffic violation on the 100 block of G Street about 9:30 a.m. and the driver sped off onto the southbound 805.

Traveling at speeds of more than 90 m.p.h., the car left 805 at Highway 117, turned around and re-entered the northbound lanes of the 805, Wolf said.

As the car headed off the interstate at H Street at 10:06 a.m., the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, which turned over several times. The driver was thrown from the car and died on the side of the road.

Deputy Coroner David Lodge said the identity of the man is still unknown.

Last Tuesday, a 27-year-old Poway woman was killed when a California Highway Patrol cruiser chasing a motorcyclist crashed into her car at a Kearny Mesa intersection.

On Wednesday, a 29-year-old San Diego man was killed when his car was hit broadside at a La Mesa intersection by another car being chased by police.
