College Basketball Roundup : San Jose Defeats Memphis State, 82-67

Guard Steve Haney scored a career-high 27 points Tuesday night to lead San Jose State to a 82-67 victory over Memphis State at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, Tenn.

Ricky Berry, the Spartans’ leading scorer, added 26 points as San Jose State of the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. raised its record to 10-7. Memphis State of the Metro Conference dropped to 10-7.

San Jose State shot 61% for the game, including 17 of 22 in the second half. The Spartans also hit 15 of 16 free throws in the last four minutes.

Memphis State shot only 36.5% from the field.

Berry also shared team honors in rebounding with Gerald Thomas. Both had 9.

The loss was the first at home for Memphis State since last Feb. 2, and the 15-point margin marked the worst Tiger loss at home since the 1979-80 season when they lost to Louisville, 69-48.

Louisville 90, Dayton 59--Herbert Crook sank 20 points, and Pervis Ellison added 18 as the Cardinals handed the Flyers their worst beating at home in 17 years.

Louisville (10-6) played its entire team in the lopsided effort.

Dayton (9-9) was paced by Nigele Knight with 18 points and Ray Springer with 11.

Dayton took a 9-2 lead but scored only seven more points in the first half with Louisville forcing 18 turnovers. Louisville led, 38-16, at the half.

Disappointed Dayton fans threw toilet paper onto the playing floor near the end of the game, and one student was ejected. A technical foul was called over the incident, and Dayton Coach Don Donoher lectured the crowd before play resumed.

Georgia Tech 85, Clemson 76--Forward Duane Ferrell scored 26 points, and center Tom Hammonds added 19 points as the Yellow Jackets controlled the middle to beat the Tigers in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Atlanta.

Clemson guard Grayson Marshall set an ACC career assist mark. His eight assists gave him 789, breaking the record of 781 set by Tyrone (Muggsy) Bogues of Wake Forest.

The game was close until the 5:52 mark, when Georgia Tech went on a 9-0 run and then iced the game by hitting free throws down the stretch. Guard Craig Neal added 16 points and 11 assists for the Yellow Jackets, who improved to 14-3, 2-2 in the ACC.

Clemson is 11-6 and 1-4.
