Bo Jackson might begin the baseball with the Omaha Royals of the American Association, Kansas City Manager John Wathan said.
“Bo knows he is going to have to make our club,” said Wathan, who managed Omaha for most of the 1987 season before moving up to Kansas City when Billy Gardner was fired.
Last season, Jackson hit 22 home runs for Kansas City but slumped in the second half of the season. “For whatever reasons, he wasn’t the same Bo Jackson in the second half,” Wathan said. “We have to see if he’s going to be the Bo Jackson of the first half of the year or the second half.”
Wathan said Jackson will be challenged for the starting left field job by Gary Thurman, who hit .283 and stole 57 bases for Omaha last season.
