Pacific 10 Roundup : Elliott Leads Arizona on 99-59 Romp Over Arizona St.
Sean Elliott scored 7 of his 15 points during a 24-5 second-half run as top-ranked Arizona routed Arizona State, 99-59, in a Pacific 10 Conference game Thursday night at Tucson.
The Sun Devils, trailing at halftime, 43-24, scored the first four points of the second half before Arizona went on its 5 1/2-minute burst. Tom Tolbert’s three-point play gave Arizona a 67-33 lead with 13:08 left.
The Wildcats scored 12 straight points in one stretch of their second-half run, capping it with an alley-oop dunk by Anthony Cook, who also finished with 15 points.
Arizona improved to 19-1 overall and 9-0 in the Pac-10, while Arizona State dropped to 11-7 and 5-4.
California 77, Oregon 74--Harmut Ortmann, a junior from West Germany, scored one of his two baskets with 37 seconds left to give the Bears a victory at Eugene, Ore.
Ortmann’s basket broke a 73-73 tie. Oregon (8-7, 3-3) came back with a free throw by forward Keith Balderston with eight seconds left, but the Bears (6-10, 3-5) sewed up the win on a driving layup by forward Andy Brigham.
Stanford 78, Oregon State 65--Greg Butler scored 24 points to lead the Cardinal over the Beavers at Corvallis, Ore.
It was the third straight loss for Oregon State (9-7, 3-4).
Gary Payton topped the Beavers’ scoring with 22 points.
Stanford (13-6, 5-3) hit 70% of its shots and made 95% of its free throws, the latter figure breaking the Gill Coliseum record of 91% set by Yale in December 1957.
