Pro football fans who take their sport seriously will have a number of ways to count down the hours to Super Bowl XXII.
The Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins will take the field for the Big Game at 3 p.m. Sunday on ABC (7)(3)(10)(42), with Al Michaels, Frank Gifford and Dan Dierdorf reporting from Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego.
Television’s spate of pregame programs kicks off tonight as the three local affiliate stations vie for viewers with “John Madden’s Super Bowl” (7 p.m., Channel 2), “Super Bowl Hot Seat” (7 p.m., Channel 4) and “Road to the Super Bowl” (7:30 p.m., Channel 7).
Late-night viewers can catch highlights of the previous 21 Super Bowls airing continuously on ESPN cable from 11:30 tonight to 7:30 a.m. Sunday, with a break for the hourlong “Super Bowl Game Day” at 8:30 a.m. The highlights, which will resume from 9:30 a.m. to noon, will be followed by “NFL Super Bowl Matchup” (noon) and “Super Bowl XXII Preview” (12:30 p.m.).
As a final warm-up to Sunday’s world championship, ABC will carry a two-hour Super Bowl preview at 1 p.m. Sunday hosted by Keith Jackson.
Pro basketball fans will have a traditional showdown of their own Sunday as CBS offers the Boston Celtics-Philadelphia 76ers game at 9 a.m. (2)(8).
In golf, the Senior Skins Game tees off in Hawaii today at 10 a.m. and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. (4)(36)(39), while the Phoenix Open comes along today at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (2)(8).
