NutraSweet Co. said it will bow to pressure to from federal regulators to let the government review its new fat substitute, Simplesse, for safety. “We will be filing a petition with the Food and Drug Administration to affirm the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status of products made with Simplesse,” NutraSweet said in a statement. NutraSweet, a subsidiary of Monsanto Co., announced this week that it had developed a new natural fat substitute that was low in calories and without cholesterol. The company said Simplesse was derived from milk and egg proteins and would not require government approval because its ingredients had already been recognized as safe.
