A car full of suspected gang members shot and killed a teen-age boy standing on a South Los Angeles street corner and a motorist was killed in a nearby shooting a short time later, authorities said Friday.

The first shooting occurred at 139th Street and Mettler Avenue in an unincorporated area of the county west of Compton at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Dinsmoor said. The second shooting was reported at 10:15 p.m. at 135th Street and Stanford Avenue, he said, adding that the incidents did not appear to be related.

In the first shooting, John H. Mack, 16, was talking to a friend when several reputed gang members slowed down their car in front of him, Dinsmoor said. “The suspects opened fire, striking Mack numerous times,” he said.

In the second incident, an unidentified motorist driving south on Stanford Avenue near 135th Street was shot by an unidentified pedestrian, Dinsmoor said. The man’s car rolled two blocks before coming to a stop.

Investigators had not determined a motive for either shooting, Dinsmoor said. No arrests were reported.
