Local News in Brief : San Clemente : Cityhood Celebration Gets Under Way Today

Share

A monthlong celebration of San Clemente’s 60 years of cityhood will begin today when student leaders from San Clemente High School go to City Hall to watch government in action.

After a day at City Hall, the students leaders will be recognized by the City Council at the regularly scheduled council meeting.

A score of special events are scheduled to commemorate San Clemente’s 1928 incorporation, the end result of planning by developer Ole Hanson, who began selling lots and building houses in the area in 1925.

On Wednesday, open houses will be held at the Community Center and at City Hall. A cake-cutting ceremony will be held in City Hall at 6:30 p.m., followed by the City Council meeting.

Other special events will follow later this month, city officials said. Dances, picnics, tennis matches and art shows, as well as special surf events at the T Street Beach are scheduled for the weekend of Feb. 20-21. On Feb. 27, the city’s animal shelter will mark its fifth anniversary with a cake-cutting ceremony sponsored by the Friends of San Clemente Animals.

The city’s birthday celebration will end Feb. 28 with a special program called “Creating Our Future,” which will include talks by winners in the San Clemente High School speech contest.
