Also appearing tonight, at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, is avant-garde rock ‘n’ roller John Cale. A native of Wales, Cale came to America in 1963 to study classical music with Aaron Copeland and three years later founded the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed.

Cale quit the band in 1968 and went on to release a string of solo albums on which he’s experimented with everything from minimalism (1971’s “Anthrax”) to punk (1980’s “Sabotage”). He’s also performed or recorded with Brian Eno, Kevin Ayers, and Kate and Anna McGarrigle; scored sound tracks for Andy Warhol’s “Heat” and Roger Corman’s “Caged Heat,” and produced albums by the Stooges, Patti Smith, the Modern Lovers, and Squeeze.
