Buffums to Refurbish Stores in Westminster, Newport Beach

A record holiday season and strong sales at Buffums stores during the last half of 1987 have prompted plans to spend more than $2 million to refurbish three stores this year, the Long Beach-based chain said Friday.

The stores are in Westminster Mall, Fashion Island in Newport Beach and Santa Anita Fashion Park in Arcadia.

“Buffums experienced record sales during the holiday season and a substantial improvement in profitability in the last half of 1987,” said John Hunt, president of the chain. “The decision to remodel and expand represents a vote of confidence by Buffums’ parent company in our strategic plan and improved results.”

The plans were approved by Buffums’ board of directors late last month. In a press release, the chain also said it is seeking new store sites in locations similar to its 4-month-old store in Solana Beach.

In August, Buffums announced that it had sold its money-losing, 37-year-old store in downtown Santa Ana.
