Fred Claire, the Dodgers’ vice president, met with Orel Hershiser in an attempt to settle the pitcher’s contract status before Wednesday’s scheduled arbitration hearing. Claire also said that Dodger lawyer Bob Walker has negotiated with Robert Fraley, Hershiser’s Florida-based agent.

Hershiser, 16-16 last season but among the National League pitching leaders in several categories, submitted a salary request of $1.25 million. The Dodgers submitted a $950,000 figure. Hershiser earned $800,000 last season.

Claire confirmed that the sides have compromised on the salary demands but would not elaborate.
