“The Real Buddy Holly Story.” Sony. $29.95. Hosted by Paul McCartney (who owns the publishing rights to Holly’s songs), this 90-minute BBC-TV tribute is a rarity in the world of mostly sketchy, low-budget video documentaries. It’s a sensitive and carefully designed portrait of the ‘50s rock star, who was killed in a 1959 plane crash. Because there wasn’t much footage taken of Holly, the video relies more on interview clips with relatives and friends than on performance shots. There are, however, valuable scenes of Holly performing “That’ll Be the Day” and “Peggy Sue” on TV and some brief but remarkable footage of Holly attending a 1955 Elvis Presley concert in his hometown of Lubbock, Tex.
