Local News in Brief : Unruh Son Seeks Office
The youngest son of the late state Treasurer Jesse M. Unruh is making his first attempt at public office as a write-in candidate for the Culver City Council.
Randy Unruh, 35, a computer consultant and former aide to state Sen. David A. Roberti (D-Los Angeles), said he is concerned with overdevelopment in the city and “wants to keep it a place where families can live.”
Unruh, who moved to Culver City in August, is running as a write-in candidate because he missed the filing deadline last week. But he said he expects to win based on his “name recognition, the feeling about the issue of development and traffic in the city, and the fact that I expect my father’s campaign fund to generously support me.”
His father, a powerful Democrat who occupied the treasurer’s office for nearly 13 years, died last August. The elder Unruh left a $1.3-million fund to support his four sons or daughter should they run for office, he said.
Three incumbents and five other challengers are also running in the April 12 election.
