Four South Bay high schools are among 69 semifinalists in the statewide Distinguished High School Awards program. They are Redondo and Mira Costa in the South Bay Union High School District, South High in the Torrance Unified School District and Narbonne in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The finalists, to be announced in June after state educators visit the competing schools, will enter a national competition sponsored by the U. S. Department of Education.

The California awards are part of a recognition program launched in 1982 by Bill Honig, state superintendent of public instruction. Elementary, middle and high schools are judged on such factors as test scores and percentages of students enrolled in basic academic courses.
