The State : 2 Babies Die; Mother Held

An Oakland woman has been charged with two counts of murder after the twin boys she gave birth to during a two-day cocaine binge died, police said. Even though Deborah Stewart, 36, was five months pregnant, she allegedly went into a cocaine binge Tuesday evening. On Thursday about 11 a.m., she gave birth to a baby boy and then left him on the bathroom floor, where he died. Four hours later, Stewart had another boy, which she says was stillborn. Police found the baby wrapped in a towel in the toilet. Stewart did not call for medical help for the babies but did call police at 3 p.m. after she started hemorrhaging. Stewart told police she has been feeling “isolated, alone and abandoned” after the twins’ father left her.
