WINTER OLYMPICS : Other Competition : Soviets 1-2 in Cross-Country Ski; E. Germans Dominate Bobsled Trials

Alexei Prokourorov and Vladimir Smirnov of the Soviet Union, duplicating the feat of the USSR’s famed “Z Boys” four years ago, finished 1-2 on Monday in the men’s 30-kilometer cross-country ski race in the Winter Olympics at Canmore, Canada.

Four years ago, in the Winter Olympics at Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, Soviet stars Nikolai Zimyatov and Aleksandr Zavialov went 1-2 in the 30-kilometer race.

Prokourorov’s victory extended the Soviet victory streak in the event to five consecutive Olympic Games. Soviets have also won three consecutive silver medals at the distance. Soviets have won two golds and two silvers in two races.

Prokourorov completed the approximately 18 3/4-mile course in 1 hour 24 minutes 26.3 seconds. Smirnov, who held the early lead before giving way to his teammate, finished 8.8 seconds back. Vegard Ulvang of Norway took the bronze medal in 1:25:11.6.

Mikhail Deviatiarov of the Soviet Union was fourth in 1:25:31.3

Dan Simoneau, 29, Bend, Ore., placed 49th in 1:35:21.4.

The East Germans dominated the official practice for the two-man bobsled again, clocking the fastest times in both runs and placing their sleds 1-2-4 in the aggregate standings.

Bernhard Lehmann, in East Germany’s No. 3 sled and a silver medalist at Sarajevo, had the fastest combined time, 1 minute 56.04 seconds--13/100ths of a second faster than teammate Detlef Richter.

Richter and defending Olympic gold medalist Wolfgang Hoppe had the fastest single runs of the day down the Olympic Park course. Hoppe led the first run with a time of 57.84 and Richter was timed in 58.12 to lead the second run.

Brent Rushlaw of Saranac Lake, N.Y., was 24th in 1:58.46, Randy Will of Endwell, N.Y., with Chicago Bears’ wide receiver Willie Gault as brakeman, was 26th in 1:58.52, and Matt Roy of Lake Placid, N.Y., was 27th with 1:58.79.

Linda Moore of Canada beat Lisa Schoeneberg of the United States, 7-5, in curling.

Moore, of North Vancouver counted two points in the third end and three in the sixth to easily defeat Schoeneberg, of Madison, Wis.

Canada, heavily favored to win, is unbeaten in its first two games of the round-robin portion of the demonstration event, while the U.S. is winless in two starts.

The 90-meter team and individual ski jumping training was canceled because of high winds.
