A San Diego man was ordered Tuesday to stand trial on charges of trying to murder a police officer who pulled him over for speeding.

Municipal Judge Melinda J. Lasater set a March 1 trial date for Raul Cortez, 22, who remains in custody in lieu of $350,000 bail.

Cortez is accused of shooting San Diego police Officer Scott Haney on Dec. 27 after the officer stopped him on a California 163 on-ramp to Interstate 5.

Haney testified in Cortez’s preliminary hearing that his bulletproof vest stopped two shots that struck him in the chest before a third shot hit him below the left arm. Cortez, who had two outstanding traffic warrants, was arrested at his apartment by San Diego police SWAT officers several hours after the pre-dawn shooting.
