Trump Joins List of Patriots’ Potential Buyers

Share

Donald Trump, multimillionaire New York real estate magnate and the principal voice of the all-but-defunct United States Football League, was added Tuesday to the roster of potential buyers for the New England Patriots.

The attorneys for the financially strapped Sullivan family, owners of the Patriots, said that talks had been held with Trump, who owned the New Jersey Generals of the USFL and spearheaded an unsuccessful $1.69 billion antitrust suit against the NFL.

Attorneys for a group headed by Fran Murray, which holds an option to buy the team, also confirmed the discussions. Murray is from Philadelphia.

During the USFL-NFL antitrust suit, both Trump and NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle testified that Trump had expressed interest in buying the then-Baltimore Colts in the late 1970s and early ‘80s.
