No. 8 San Diego State Loses to Stanford in Volleyball
The 13th-ranked Stanford men’s volleyball team beat No. 8 San Diego State, 12-15, 15-10, 15-8, 19-17, Wednesday night at Peterson Gym.
Dan Hanan had 21 kills to lead Stanford (7-8 overall, 2-2 in the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.). Freshman Hugh Foster had 24 kills for the Aztecs (6-7, 1-4).
San Diego State will play Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Peterson against No. 4 UC Santa Barbara.
BASEBALL
Henry Jiminez broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run home run in the seventh inning to lead UC San Diego to a 6-3 victory at Point Loma Nazarene College.
Jiminez’s homer came off Dan Whitney, who relieved loser Dave Pierce (0-2). Chris Murphy, who was 3 for 4, hit a solo home run for UCSD (3-0) in the eighth.
Mike Morgan (1-0) pitched six innings. Point Loma is 0-8.
SOFTBALL
Karen Winkler and Nora Flores each threw a three-hitter as United States International University swept a doubleheader at home from San Diego State, 9-0, 4-2.
Michelle Hagen went 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs in the opener for USIU (3-3). San Diego State is 4-2.
BASKETBALL
Kevin Stewart scored 19 points in his final home game as UC San Diego defeated Whittier College, 86-74, in a nonconference game.
Robb Rittgers and Greg Paskwietz each scored 16 for UCSD (16-8). Rittgers, the second-leading free-throw shooter in the NCAA Division III, made all 8 of his free throws. Jay Bailey scored 16 for Whittier (9-14), which had 25 turnovers.
GOLF
Allison and Susan Shapcott of U.S. International University and JoAnn Walker of San Diego State each shot 221 to tie for third in the 54-hole Chris Johnson Arizona Invitational women’s college tournament at the 6,064-yard, par-72 Randolph North Course in Tucson.
Machico Hattori of Texas won with a total of 218. Texas also won the team tournament with a total of 895. SDSU was fourth with 909 and USIU was sixth with 911.
