6 Wounded in Gunfire Tied to Gang Activity

Six people, including three teen-agers, were wounded in suspected gang-related shootings during a five-hour period Wednesday night, authorities reported Thursday.

Three of the shootings occurred in Compton, where one arrest was made. Authorities said the incidents appeared to be unrelated. A fourth shooting occurred in Boyle Heights.

Compton police said a bullet fired from a passing car grazed the nose of a 15-year-old who was standing with friends near Maie Avenue and Brazil Street about 5:30 p.m. Nearly two hours later, gunmen in a passing car shot two suspected gang members as they stood in a driveway in the 900 block of North Spring Street, Compton Police Lt. Percy Perridon said.

Robert Sheppard, 26, of Long Beach and Keith Ray, 24, of Compton were hospitalized. Sheppard was in serious condition; Ray’s condition was listed as stable.

In a third incident, Haywood Miller, 22, of Compton was shot in the stomach at 10:10 p.m. in the 1800 block of East Rosecrans Boulevard. Miller was hospitalized in critical condition.

In Boyle Heights, detectives were investigating a drive-by shooting of two 16-year-olds about 9:15 p.m. on Atlantic Avenue near the Santa Ana Freeway. The juveniles were taken to County-USC Medical Center.
