AND WAIT, THERE’S MORE: Wow, what a great calling card. Warner Bros. Records is boasting that its new band, Underworld, cut its debut album in 44 minutes, 41 seconds. Well, maybe it did take a little bit longer . But the Welsh group did record every song on its new record in one take--with no overdubs. (They use synthesizer programs on some tunes, but everything is reproduced live.) Could this be the end of expensive studio technology? If you want to decide for yourself, the band’s album, “Underneath the Radar,” is out this week, with such expressive song titles as “The God Song,” “I Need a Doctor” and “Miracle Party”. . . . Joe Satriani isn’t just enjoying the surprise success of his “Surfing With the Alien” album. We hear he’s signed on as the guitarist in Mick Jagger’s European tour band. . . . And we bet you already know that everyone from Tom Petty to R.E.M. has been under the spell of the Byrds at one time or another. And if you want to hear a fascinating collection of Byrds outtakes and unreleased tunes, watch for “Never Before,” due out this week from Rhino Records. The compilation includes a rough-mix version of Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue,” the Gene Clark-penned title song, an alternate take of “Eight Miles High” and “Lady Friend,” a David Crosby gem only released in 1967 as a single.
