BROADCAST NEWS

I have just read Dennis McDougal’s “Broadcast News, L.A.,” and I would like to set a few things straight. First, McDougal claims that “Cliff Morrison . . . once told a fellow employee to take her problems to Frank Gardner’s office until he was reminded that Gardner was two general managers ago. It took a couple more embarrassing moments before he could remember that the present general manager was Robert Hyland.” I have spent seven years with KCBS and am respected by my co-workers in the newsroom. I resent the portrayal of me losing sight of who is in the front office.

Second, Maclovio Perez initiated the new Kouvaras weather computer system, not Kevin O’Connell. And finally, McDougal failed to mention that the talented people who put those newscasts together every day are the finest in the business. This is my 20th year in broadcasting and my last day at KCBS.

CLIFF MORRISON

Los Angeles

Dennis McDougal replies: I was there when Morrison made the remarks regarding the station’s general managers, so I know them to be true. I never said O’Connell initiated Kouvaras. I said he was previewing it the day I was at the station and that he wanted it used and that he tended to get what he wanted. He did then. He still does.
