Local News in Brief : Oil-Drilling Ruling Is Delayed

Share

Torrance officials said they will need more time to gather enough information to rule on a study of the environmental impact of drilling for oil beneath a southeast Torrance neighborhood.

The council now plans an April 19 hearing on an environmental study of Kelt Oil & Gas’ plan to drill 108 wells under a 560-acre area that is primarily residential. The wells would be drilled at an angle from a site at the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Border Avenue.

The council was scheduled to rule Tuesday on the adequacy on an environmental study of the drilling proposal, but council members asked for maps of the locations of abandoned oil wells and for more information on how the project would affect the water table.

Residents say they worry that the project would cause visual blight, noise pollution and other problems.
