Coach Tom Davis believes Iowa’s big guns are heating up at just the right time, with the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. tournament approaching.

Ed Horton had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Roy Marble had 19 points as the 13th-ranked Hawkeyes rallied in the final eight minutes to beat No. 7 Michigan, 95-87, Saturday in a Big Ten game at Iowa City, Iowa.

“Both Marble and Horton have been on streaks,” Davis said. “Marble, the last three or four games, has played the best ball of the season and for Eddie, it’s the best play of his career.”

For Marble, a junior from Flint, Mich., the come-from-behind victory took a little of the sting out of a 120-103 thrashing at the hands of Michigan earlier this month.

“Now I can go home,” he said.

Michigan (22-5, 11-3) led by eight points twice in the first half and three times in the second half. Iowa (20-7, 10-4) led by as many as 14 points in the first half.

“With running teams, you’re going to have those big swings in the game,” Davis said. “With the two highest-scoring teams in the league, you’re not going to have consistency.

“(Coming back) says something about the unselfishness on this team. They are constantly working on that.”

Michigan had a 75-67 lead with just less than eight minutes left, but Marble keyed a 12-4 Iowa run that tied the game, 79-79, with 6:07 left.

The lead changed hands three times after that, with Horton’s jumper putting Iowa ahead for good, 86-85, with 2:31 left. B.J. Armstrong and Bill Jones hit two free throws apiece to give Iowa a 90-85 lead with 1:13 to go.

Gary Grant hit a long jump shot for Michigan with 18 seconds left that was first called a three-pointer and then ruled a two-point shot to cut the margin to 90-87, but Iowa hit 3 of 4 free throws and Horton added a score-capping slam at the buzzer.

“We got control of the game,” Michigan Coach Bill Frieder said. “We just didn’t sustain it. Iowa came back and got control, and that’s just the way it goes.”

Grant, who played the second half with four fouls, scored 24 points and Glen Rice added 20 for Michigan.

Kansas 82, Missouri 77--Danny Manning scored 37 points, and the Jayhawks scored 20 straight points in the first half to upset the No. 15 Tigers and snap their 21-game home-court winning streak in a Big Eight game at Columbia, Mo.
