Local News in Brief : Writers, Producers Talk
Negotiators for the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers continued talking late Monday night as a three-year contract covering 9,000 movie and TV writers neared its midnight expiration.
A writers’ strike could begin later this week if a new agreement is not reached.
Representatives of both sides said major issues remained unresolved, including a producers’ demand that writers make concessions concerning residual payments for one-hour TV shows.
A producers’ spokesman in Los Angeles said he expected the talks to continue beyond the midnight expiration. Guild members are scheduled to vote on whatever contract proposals result in Los Angeles Tuesday and in New York Wednesday.
The Writers Guild staged a two-week strike in 1985 and a three-month strike in 1981.
