Montebello : Smoke Sensors May Be the Law in All Single-Family Residences

Share

The Montebello City Council has introduced an ordinance that would require smoke detectors in all single-family residences in the city. The ordinance, which had unanimous support last week, is scheduled for final approval at the council’s March 14 meeting. If passed, the ordinance would take effect 30 days later.

The ordinance was introduced in response to a Jan. 24 house fire that claimed six lives in Montebello. Fire Chief Robert J. King told the council that a smoke detector would have provided sufficient warning to enable safe evacuation of the house. Firefighters found a smoke detector, still in its box, in a closet in the house. As of Jan. 1, 1987, state law has required smoke detectors in all multiple-dwelling housing.
