Thieves stole five rare paintings from the hometown mansion of ousted President Ferdinand E. Marcos, police said Wednesday.

Benjamin Guittab, caretaker of the house in Batac, northern Luzon, said he noticed while cleaning on Wednesday that only the frames remained. The burglars apparently climbed a tree and crawled in an open window of a second-floor bedroom during the weekend, police said. There were no suspects.

The 4-foot-by-6-foot paintings by 19th-Century painter Juan Luna, a national hero, had adorned the Marcoses’ living room. Antique collectors and the curator of the Luna shrine near here say the works are priceless.
