Local News in Brief : Countywide : 92 More Freeway Call Boxes Are On Line
Ninety-two call boxes along the Garden Grove Freeway were officially activated Friday.
Garden Grove Mayor Tilman Williams and officials from the state Department of Transportation and Orange County Transportation Commission--which is directing the project--attended a dedication ceremony at the Garden Grove Community Center.
The boxes were installed on both sides of the freeway at quarter-mile intervals. The first freeway call boxes in Orange County began operating on the Orange Freeway in November.
In the next phase of the project, 166 call boxes will be installed along the Riverside Freeway. The county’s freeway system will be fully equipped with the phones--1,028 in all--by June, county transportation spokeswoman Robin Bishopp said.
