A man possibly under the influence of drugs died early Friday in police custody in Los Angeles after he jumped into a patrol car and had to be dragged out of it, authorities said.

Police found Anthony Jones, 29, “acting irregularly” in the middle of the intersection of 67th Street and Western Avenue at 1:10 a.m., Lt. William Hall said.

After Jones ran up to the police vehicle, unlocked the rear door and climbed into the rear seat, the officers got out and pulled him from the car, Hall said.

“When they got him out, he didn’t try to assault the officers but he hung on to the car and would not let go,” Hall said. “They had to force him down on the pavement, where he was handcuffed.”

Believing that Jones was high on drugs, the officers called for an ambulance. Before paramedics arrived, Jones stopped breathing, Hall said.

An autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause of death.
