Local News in Brief : City to Recruit Latinos

Share

Mayor Tom Bradley ordered personnel officials Friday to begin more aggressive recruiting of Latinos for job openings in Los Angeles city government.

Unlike blacks and Asians, Bradley said, Latinos are under-represented in proportion to their numbers in the city’s population. About 18% of the city’s 42,000 full-time employees are Latino.

“I am convinced we can do better and we will do better,” Bradley said at a City Hall news conference.

The recruiting plan was praised by City Councilman Richard Alatorre and the president of the Los Angeles City Employees Chicano Assn., Richard Alarcon. Every year the city fills 5,000 to 6,000 job openings.
