Cypress College’s major fund-raiser for the year, the Americana Awards Dinner, garnered $90,250 this year--a 29% increase over last year, college officials announced.

Money raised at the annual dinner, which was held Feb. 20 at Disneyland Hotel, will go to two programs at the college for the disabled. The programs are the Roosevelt Center for physically disabled students and the Educational Services Center for students with learning disabilities.

Randy Smith, a 25-year-old Cypress student who is confined to a wheelchair, accepted the fund-raising checks on behalf of the student body.

“It is very touching to see such wonderful support from the community,” Smith said. “Those of us here now, as well as those who follow, will certainly be helped by your generosity.”
