A 19-month-old girl was killed and her mother injured Saturday in a traffic collision in Newhall, the California Highway Patrol said.

The child, Kiley N. Adams, was in a restraint seat but suffered fatal head injuries when the van in which she was riding was struck broadside by a flatbed truck, CHP Officer Charlotte Foley said.

The accident occurred at 4:15 p.m. at San Fernando Road and Sierra Highway, Foley said. The child’s mother, Tamara L. Adams, 27, of Canyon Country, was eastbound on San Fernando Road when she turned left into the path of the truck, Foley said.

The van then struck an abandoned car on the shoulder of the road, and the truck knocked down two power poles, Foley said.

Adams was listed in serious condition at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, a hospital spokeswoman said. The truck driver, Jerry W. Manley, 29, of Lancaster, was treated at the hospital and released, she said.

Neither driver was arrested or cited, Foley said.
