One of Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham’s staunchest supporters in the state Senate admitted he has little hope that Mecham will be cleared at his impeachment trial, which ended its first week of testimony. Sen. Jeff Hill (R-Tucson) said he does not think Mecham has more than a handful of Senate votes for acquittal at this point. Hill said: “I think there’s a sentiment that for the good of the state, Evan Mecham has got to leave.” Mecham is accused of obstructing an investigation into an alleged death threat by an aide, lending state money to his auto dealership and concealing a $350,000 campaign loan.
