Bradley’s Hersey Hawkins broke Larry Bird’s Missouri Valley Conference tournament record by scoring 41 points to lead the 14th-ranked Braves (24-4) over Indiana State, 93-74, Saturday night in the first round.

Hawkins, the nation’s leading scorer who is averaging more than 36 points a game, made four three-point shots and sank 17 of 17 free throws.

Bird set the old record of 40 points in 1978, when he played for Indiana State.

The 41 points also gave Hawkins 1,014 this season, breaking Oscar Robertson’s 28-year-old MVC mark of 1,011.

Robertson watched Hawkins’ performance, and Bird’s brother, Eddie, who plays for Indiana State (7-21) scored 21 points.
