In its ongoing campaign to help stamp out illiteracy, ABC will be presenting an “Afterschool Special” about the problem of adult illiteracy March 16. Edward Albert has the lead role in “Daddy Can’t Read,” about a father who has kept his inability to read a secret from not only his employers but also his children. The drama co-stars Marcia Strassman, Cheryl Arutt, Richard Roundtree, Joey Travolta and Cathy Rigby McCoy.

Bill Cosby and Tom Selleck, whose TV series used to play opposite one another on Thursday nights, are competitors in three categories in this year’s “People’s Choice Awards,” airing March 13 on CBS. They are in the running for favorite male TV performer (with Bruce Willis), all-time favorite TV star (with Michael J. Fox) and favorite all-around male entertainer (with Eddie Murphy).

NBC has commissioned a TV movie about Uli Derickson, the flight attendant who was credited with saving numerous lives when her TWA flight was hijacked to Algiers in June, 1985. Lindsay Wagner, one-time star of “The Bionic Woman,” has the lead role in “The Taking of Flight 847: The Uli Derickson Story.” Derickson is a consultant on the project.

Briefly noted: “Donahue” has been renewed by KNBC Channel 4. . . . Also coming back in syndication next season are “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” and “Runaway With the Rich and Famous.”
