Federal, state and local officials joined with a coalition of San Francisco Bay Area community groups to urge Congress to approve a one-year extension in the amnesty program for illegal immigrants. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), California Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy and Nancy Walker, president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, called on their constituents to demand immediate action on the bill, currently bogged down in a House subcommittee. The Immigration and Naturalization Service, Pelosi said, was “nowhere near its goal” of getting more than 2 million eligible aliens signed up for the amnesty program, set to expire May 4.
