Police officers from Chula Vista and National City opened fire Wednesday on a narcotics suspect who allegedly pointed a gun at them as he drove his car on a Point Loma street, police said. No one was wounded.

The suspect, Richard Madsen, whose address was not immediately available, was arrested shortly afterward at a motel, San Diego police said.

Madsen was being sought by members of the Narcotics Task Force, which consists of officers from police agencies throughout the area, according to San Diego police. Various warrants were outstanding on Madsen, police said.

Although details were sketchy, San Diego police provided the following account:

At 3:02 p.m., three officers from the two departments approached Madsen’s vehicle as it was stopped for traffic on West Point Loma Boulevard at Groton Street. Madsen attempted to evade arrest by backing his car into the vehicle behind him and driving off.

As he drove past officers, according to the police account, Madsen pointed a handgun at them, prompting police to open fire.

It was unclear how many bullets were fired.

Madsen, 25, was booked into County Jail on suspicion of possession of a weapon, assault with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer, a jail spokeswoman said. Bail was set at $100,500, she said.
