Catarina Ligendza, the Swedish soprano renowned for her Wagnerian operatic roles, abruptly canceled all future engagements and announced her retirement, an official of the Deutsche Oper in West Berlin said Thursday. Similar messages had been relayed to other leading opera houses, Deutsche Oper administrator Goetz Friedrich said. Ligendza, 50, gave no reason for her surprise decision, and Friedrich said his efforts to change her mind failed.
