A teen-age girl escaped serious injury Friday night when her car was struck by a tire that apparently was thrown from a freeway overpass.

The incident, the latest in a streak of crimes in which objects have been thrown from overpasses onto motorists below, occurred near Interstate 805 and California 94 at 10:45 p.m., according to San Diego Police Department spokesman Bill Robinson.

Clairemont resident Sally Ann Rowe, 16, was driving northbound on 805, approaching the California 94 overpass, when the front of her car was hit by a tire. The windshield shattered, and Rowe was cut by the flying glass. The hood and roof of her car also sustained major damage, Robinson said.

Rowe drove to the University Avenue exit of Interstate 805 and phoned police from a service station.

Police are still investigating and no suspects have been arrested, Robinson said.

Five similar incidents on San Diego freeways have been reported in recent weeks. On Tuesday, two teen-age boys were arrested and charged with assault for allegedly dropping a large chunk of concrete from the Pershing Drive overpass onto Interstate 5 on Feb. 29, critically injuring a man who was driving a Corvette beneath the overpass. They were also charged with dropping another piece of concrete onto another driver moments earlier.
