College Roundup : Chapman Wins Sixth Straight

Chris Cutliff, Bucky Bollinger and Steve Guidice all hit home runs to lead Chapman College to an 8-7 victory over Cal State Northridge in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s baseball game at Northridge.

Chapman scored three runs on four hits and two Matador errors in the eighth, but Northridge scored three in the bottom of the eighth on four hits, including Lenn Gilmore’s seventh homer. The Matadors had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth when Ted Weisfuss led off with a single, but reliver Matt Patuano retired the final three batters.

It was Chapman’s (13-10-1 overall, 2-1 in CCAA) sixth consecutieve victory.

In other baseball games:

Washington State 7, Cal State Fullerton 6--Richard Hubbell (2-0) got the victory and Paul Johnson (3-2) took the loss as the Cougars, last year’s champions of the Pacific 10 North, improved to 10-2. The Titans fell to 16-8.

Washinton State led, 4-1, into eighth when Kieth Kaub hit a three-run homer, his ninth of the season, to put Fullerton ahead, 5-4

The Cougars scored three in the ninth, as Pete Blanksma’s doubled and scored on Jimmy Connor’s single. John Olerud singled and Johnson was releived by Danny DeVille. Scott Smith singled to load the bases, Joe Urbon’s double scored two to put Washington State ahead, 7-4.

Fullerton’s Greg Mannion hit a two-out out double and scored on a single by Rex Peters.
