Track and Field Roundup : Frosh Leads Texas Women to NCAA Title

Freshman Carlette Guidry accounted for 38 points to lead the University of Texas women to the team title in the NCAA Indoor track and field championships Saturday at Oklahoma City.

Guidry won the long jump and 55-meter dash, took second in the 200 meters and ran on the winning 1,600-meter relay team as the Longhorns got 71 points.

Yvette Bates and Wendy Brown of USC finished 1-2 in the triple jump for the second straight year, with Bates winning at 44 feet 9 inches.

Arkansas won the men’s title with 34 points as Joe Falcon won both the mile and the 3,000 meters. His time in the mile was 3:59.78.

Pittsburgh’s Lee McRae won the men’s 55-meter dash for the third consecutive year. McRae, the 1987 World University Games and Pan American Games 100-meter gold medalist, was timed in 6.07, edging Brian Cooper of McNeese Other winners included Florida’s Dennis Mitchell in the 200 in 20.73; Auburn’s Clifton Campbell in the 400 in 46.40, a stadium record, and Southwest Louisiana’s Hollis Conway in the high jump at 7-6 1/2.

Gail Devers and David Wilson set school records to help UCLA win women’s and men’s meets at Drake Stadium.

Devers won the 100-meter hurdles in 13.04 seconds, breaking the record of 13.07 by Jackie Joyner-Kersee in 1985, and also won the long jump at 20 feet 6 1/2 inches.

Wilson won the hammer throw at 212-9, breaking the record of 211-1, set by John Brenner in 1984.

In women’s scoring, UCLA had 115 points, followed by Cal State Northridge 50, California 45, Cal State Long Beach 31 and Azusa Pacific 11.

The UCLA men had 108 points, followed by Azusa Pacific 47, Cal State Northridge 27 and Cal State Long Beach 11.
