College Roundup : UCI Turns Back Arizona State in Tennis

UC Irvine’s Mike Briggs and Trevor Kronemann defeated Mike Holton and Brian Gyegko, 6-3, 6-0, 7-6, as the seventh-ranked Anteaters beat 19th-ranked Arizona State, 7-2, Sunday in nonconference men’s tennis at Arizona State.

UC Irvine’s No. 2 doubles team of Richard Lubner and Mark Kaplan won their seventh straight match, defeating Ken Cooperstein and Doug Sacks, 6-0, 6-4, 6-2.

In singles play, Kronemann defeated Cooperstein, 6-3, 6-4, and Lubner defeated Holton, 6-3, 7-6.

Irvine is 12-3, and Arizona State fell to 12-4.

In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. softball:

Cal State Fullerton 1-13, Fresno State 3-1--Charis Monroe and Debbie Schneider each had two hits for fifth-ranked Fullerton (23-3, 3-1) in the second game at Fullerton. Janice Okerlund and Chris Gage combined for a six-hitter, and Gage (2-0) got the victory. In the first game, third-ranked Fresno State (13-5, 3-1) gave Fullerton’s Anjie Bryant (13-1) her first loss of the season.

In Hawaii Invitational softball:

Hawaii 4, Chapman 3--Hawaii (12-6) broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth innning and hung on to win the championship. In the semifinals, Chapman (19-8) defeated Arizona Western, 5-3.
