Local News in Brief : Woman, 84, Held in Death
An 84-year-old piano teacher was arrested Monday on suspicion of murder in the death of her 86-year-old sister, who was found dead Saturday morning in the West Los Angeles home the women shared, police said.
An arrest warrant was obtained for Edna Lamont based on suspicion that Lamont inflicted fatal bludgeon-type injuries upon her sister, Mary McBride, Los Angeles Police Cmdr. William Booth said, explaining, “We had sufficient reason to take her into custody.”
Lamont was held without bail at Sybil Brand Institute, pending a review of the case by the district attorney’s office, Booth said.
A coroner’s autopsy on McBride’s body was scheduled for today.
Lamont told police she found the bleeding body of her sister, who had Alzheimer’s disease, on the floor of their Tennessee Avenue house early Saturday. Lamont later told detectives that her sister often fell while walking in the middle of the night.
Neighbors said that the two sisters did not get along well in the small house, but none of the neighbors interviewed said they heard or saw anything resembling a struggle Saturday.
