About 3,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into the ocean Monday when a sewer main overflowed in La Jolla, the county Health Services Department reported.

The spill occurred at 1:45 p.m. when a sewer main blocked by roots forced sewage out of a manhole in an alley at 6063 La Jolla Blvd. The sewage flowed into a nearby storm drain that empties into the ocean in the 5900 block of Camino de la Costa, a health department spokeswoman said.

The spill was contained at 2:15 p.m. Contamination signs were posted for 100 yards on either side of the ocean spill, the spokeswoman said. The signs will remain for at least 24 hours.
