The Golden Gate Bridge was closed to traffic for nearly an hour while a bomb squad investigated a 100-foot rope dangling over the side with a barrel tied to it. The barrel was found to contain only some newspapers, bottles and garbage, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said, adding that it was not known who was responsible.
