A power-play goal by defenseman Chris Chelios early in the third period offset two goals by Minnesota’s Brian Bellows as the Montreal Canadiens tied the North Stars, 2-2, Monday night.

Goalie Jon Casey, in only his fifth start with the North Stars, made 29 saves. Canadien goalie Patrick Roy stopped 24 shots.

Penalties to the North Stars’ Gord Dineen and Frantisek Musil--the latter for closing his hand on the puck--early in the third period gave Montreal a two-man advantage for 76 seconds.

The Canadiens needed only four seconds to tie, 2-2. Larry Robinson poked the puck to Chelios in the left circle, and Chelios fired it past Casey’s gloved hand 2:22 into the final period.

Bellows opened the scoring with a nudge of his skate that went undetected by the referee.

Center Marc Habscheid circled from behind the net and fired a shot that Roy blocked. Bellows flicked the loose puck between Roy’s legs with his left skate 1:22 into the game.
