Local News in Brief : Countywide : Laguna Hills High Tops 10th-Grade Competition

Laguna Hills High School is the winner of the 1988 10th-grade Orange County Academic Decathlon, the Orange County Department of Education announced.

The sophomore-level decathlon involves competition in 10 academic contests. A total of 43 high schools in Orange County competed in this year’s event.

The nine other top finishers in the contest were Sunny Hills High, Fullerton, second place; Woodbridge High, Irvine, third; Foothill High of Tustin Unified School District, fourth; Magnolia High, Anaheim, fifth; Edison High, Huntington Beach, sixth; El Dorado High, Placentia, seventh; Westminster High, Westminster, eighth; University High, Irvine, ninth, and Canyon High, Orange Unified School District, 10th.

In the upper-grades high school decathlon, held earlier this year, Los Alamitos High School was the Orange County champion. Los Alamitos High finished seventh Saturday in the statewide competition, which was held in Sacramento. Taft High School of Los Angeles won.

Two Los Alamitos High decathlon team members won first-place individual awards in the statewide event. They are Miriam Burstein in the essay competition and Jeff Gima in social studies competition.
