*** 1/2Richard Strauss: “Intermezzo.” Home Vision. $49.95.

Strauss’ wily saga of his own domestic quasi-bliss offers a piquant fusion of autobiographical trivia, sentimental comedy and lyric pathos. John Cox’s affectionate Glyndebourne production of 1974 (created for Elisabeth Soderstrom) moves the action from the turn of the century to the ‘20s, and thus clashes gently with the period stills flashed on the screen during the vibrant symphonic interludes. Andrew Porter’s stylish translation reinforces the aura of Noel Coward’s London rather than Frau Pauline Strauss’ Garmisch. The ensemble performance, however, is magical. Felicity Lott in the central role manages to suggest both formidable shrew and irresistibly sensuous bride, and she sings like an angel. Gustav Kuhn conducts with masterly charm.
