Local News in Brief : High School Drug Clinic Planned
The Inglewood school district plans to open a pilot school-based clinic serving students with drug problems next month.
The school board approved this week the hiring of a drug “intervention specialist” at the Morningside High School clinic to provide substance abuse counseling, education and referral to outside agencies. Another full-time counselor will be hired shortly, officials said.
College student-interns working in the clinic will provide peer counseling for students as well, officials said.
The cost for the pilot clinic will be between $175,000 to $200,000, according to Special Services Director Hollis Dillon, with the money coming from a federal grant awarded the Inglewood schools for drug suppression programs.
Unlike school clinics in the area that deal with a range of health issues, the Morningside clinic will focus exclusively on substance abuse, officials said.
