About 180 gallons of sewage spilled into Mission Bay early Thursday morning, when a grease-blocked main overflowed near the entrance of Fiesta Island, the County Health Services Department reported.

At 8:35 a.m. the blocked sewer main forced a manhole to overflow at Knoxville Street and Morena Boulevard, a department spokeswoman said. The sewage flowed down a concrete storm channel and into Mission Bay.

City utility crews contained the spill at 10:15 a.m. Signs warning of the contamination were posted for 100 yards of coastline on either side of where the sewage entered the bay. Sampling will be done daily beginning today to determine when water quality is safe for swimming and other water activities, the spokeswoman said.
